Ingredients

For the beef & gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, adds depth)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp thyme or Italian seasoning (optional)
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, for richness)

For the mashed potatoes:

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and diced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

1. Make the mashed potatoes:

  • Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15-20 minutes).
  • Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using). Set aside, keep warm.

2. Cook the beef & gravy:

  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess grease.
  • Add chopped onion and garlic, cook until softened (about 3-4 minutes).
  • Sprinkle in the flour, stir to coat the meat. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Slowly stir in beef broth, Worcestershire, soy sauce (if using), and seasonings.
  • Simmer 5-10 minutes until gravy thickens. Add a pat of butter for extra flavor, if desired.

3. Serve:

  • Spoon mashed potatoes onto a plate or bowl.
  • Pour the beef and gravy over the top.
  • Garnish with parsley if you’re feeling fancy.
