Preparation

1. Get the oven hot enough, about 350°F, or 175°C. 2.

2. Brown the ground beef and sauté the onion in a big pan over medium-high heat until the meat is cooked through and the onions are transparent. Remove any surplus of fat.

3. Combine the salsa and taco seasoning. To combine the flavors, simmer the beef mixture for about 5 minutes on low heat.

4. In a separate small dish, combine the sour cream and cream of mushroom soup.

Step 5: Make a crispy foundation by spreading half of the Doritos on the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.

6. Arrange half of the beef mixture, half of the soup and sour cream mixture, and half of the shredded cheese on top of the Doritos.

7. Layer the remaining Doritos on top, then add the remaining meat mixture, soup mixture, and shredded cheese. Repeat layers as needed.

Step 8: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 20 minutes.

9. After removing the foil, continue baking for 5 to 10 more minutes, or until the cheese begins to bubble and becomes a little yellow.

10. After 5 minutes, remove the casserole from the oven and set it aside to cool. Toss in some chopped tomatoes, green onions, or black olives for garnish.

Tips and Variations

You have the option to use spicy salsa or include sliced jalapeño into the meat mixture for those who like a little heat. Substituting ground chicken or turkey is a great way to save calories and satisfy those who don’t eat beef. Choose reduced-fat cheese, baked Doritos, and low-fat sour cream to make it a little healthier. To boost the nutritional profile without sacrificing flavor, try adding extra vegetables like maize or bell peppers to the mixture.
