Patty Melt

Here’s a classic Patty Melt recipe for you!

Ingredients:

  • For the patty:
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • For the sandwich:
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for grilling)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or American cheese, if you prefer)
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional, for spreading)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the patty:

  • Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium-high heat.
  • In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using).
  • Divide the beef into 4 equal portions and form into thin patties that are slightly larger than the bread slices. This helps them fit perfectly when assembled.

2. Cook the patty:

  • Place the patties onto the hot skillet or griddle. Cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness (medium is typical).
  • Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

3. Sauté the onions:

  • In the same skillet, add a little butter and toss in the thinly sliced onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

4. Prepare the sandwich:

  • Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of each slice of rye bread (optional).
  • Place one slice of Swiss cheese on the inside of each piece of bread.
  • Place a patty on top of the cheese, followed by a generous amount of the sautéed onions.

5. Grill the patty melt:

  • Heat a griddle or skillet over medium heat and melt butter in it.
  • Place the assembled sandwiches (one or two at a time) in the skillet.
  • Grill for about 3-4 minutes per side or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, pressing gently with a spatula to help the sandwich cook evenly.

6. Serve:

  • Remove the patty melt from the skillet, slice it in half, and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious, melty Patty Melt!
