Here’s a Savory Cabbage Beef Bake recipe – a hearty, comforting dish that’s simple to make and perfect for a weeknight dinner or meal prep.
Savory Cabbage Beef Bake
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small head of cabbage (about 6 cups), chopped
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with juices)
- 1/4 cup tomato paste or ketchup
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
- 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the beef mixture:
- In a large skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium heat.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add chopped onion and cook 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Stir in garlic and cook 1 more minute.
- Add tomatoes and spices:
- Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Let simmer 5–10 minutes to blend flavors.
- Prepare the cabbage:
- While the meat simmers, in another large pan or pot, sauté chopped cabbage in olive oil or butter over medium-high heat until slightly wilted (about 5–7 minutes). It doesn’t need to be fully soft – it’ll cook more in the oven.
- Assemble the bake:
- In a 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half the cabbage, then half the beef mixture. Repeat with remaining cabbage and beef.
- If using, sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
- Optional: add breadcrumbs for a crunchy topping.
- Bake:
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Uncover and bake an additional 10–15 minutes, or until hot and bubbly and cheese is melted.
- Serve:
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Great with crusty bread or a green salad!
